Looking ahead to 2016

As I look back at 2015 and think about what I want to do differently or live into with more intention in 2016, I came up with quite a list as you can imagine.

But when I really dug deep (Thanks to the Powersheets for a lot of that) I realized that there are two big things I want to do in 2016.

  1. I want to be a better steward of what resources I already have. I am certainly fortunate and so grateful for all the good that I have. But I don’t always steward it well. Often when we think of stewardship it’s in regards to money and while that is certainly apart of my goal, I’m thinking of a broader view of stewardship. Stewarding my time. My talents. The things I already own. The things that we might purchase this upcoming year (hello Baby Registry madness). How can I honor God, our own family goals and also be able to have the margin to give back (and give away) our possessions. I want to be reminded that this is not our eternal home and to hold loosely to those material things that I can often hold with a clenched fist.
  2. I want to S A V O R every moment of this new year.  I don’t know what to expect as a new mom. I don’t know how I’ll feel about returning to work this summer. I don’t know what I’ll need. I don’t know how becoming a mom will stir up new grief emotions of losing my own mom this past fall.  What I do know is that I don’t want to miss moments. I know (from all my friends, family and voices I hear through blogs and podcasts) that being a mom of little littles is hard. And while I’m buckling my seat belt to prepare for that hard, I don’t want to be so caught up in the hard that I wish it away.  I don’t want to wish away time spent. That’s the paradox I’ve found grieving loss and celebrating new life this year simultaneously. Taking the hard and knowing it’s only here for a season and readily embracing what comes with it. It’s always darkest before the dawn.

So what do these two things mean for me practically? 

Slowing down.

Saying no to things.

Eating clean meals at home around the table with people with I love.

Giving things away.

Reading more.

Watching less TV/Netflix.

Writing more (both here and in my journal).

Being intentional about time with those who matter most.

Taking long walks.

Getting as much sleep as possible.

Enjoying a weekly bath.

Doing my own nails every Sunday night to wind down our Sabbath.

Joining with Supper Club monthly for a great meal, laughs and maybe even a few tears.

and one of the biggest ones…..

Not feeling guilty for doing any of these things over something I SHOULD be doing (things I said no to, date nights out vs. at home, a super clean house, etc.).

I recently read somewhere that our “shoulds” never bring us true happiness. While I completely recognize that life isn’t all about being happy and that there is a lot of life that is unhappy and there’s a true difference between happiness and joy, I do see the truth in this statement.  What are the things that fire me up? That only I was created to do? What do I do with the ease of falling snow? That’s what I am going to do this year.  (Thanks Shauna for this amazing reminder). I’m realizing those things are different than they were 10 years ago.  5 years ago.  Even 2 years ago.  A lot of my “shoulds” are those former things.

I’m no longer the gal that wants to be orchestrating the details of an event or casting vision for a huge long term project. While my job requires me to do that on occasion, I’d much rather be meeting with someone one-on-one in a coffee shop, writing or teaching/leading a small group over the masses.  I think that came out in my goals and what I want this upcoming year to look like. Say no to the things that used to fire me up that now leave me depleted. I’m walking away and won’t feel guilty at all because I’ve got a whole new list of things that feel like the ease of the falling snow. That’s where I want to live in 2016.

So as you lean hard into your 2016, what are the 1-2 things that you wish to focus on? What feels like the easy of the falling snow for you? For me, it’s savoring each moment and doing the best with what I’ve already got. If I can do those two things, 2016 will be a winner.

Weekly Roundup-March 18, 2012

A few days late…spring break got the best of me folks…

Goals:

  • Physical–As I mentioned, I ran my first 10 mile run last Saturday and it was so empowering to do so!  We are really in the home stretch for the 1/2 marathon (less than two weeks!) and we are grateful to have gotten 10 miles in, as many training programs stop there.  We were hoping to do 10 today, but due to scheduling issues poor planning, we ended up running after church and it was 70 degrees.  Seeing as how we typically run in about 50 degree weather (max), we were not prepared, not well hydrated and we both had to stop a little early.  I stopped right at 8 miles and walked the rest of the way in (we were on a trail, so we had ran 5 miles out).  I texted the Beau who was ahead of me to call me when he was done, planning on asking him to go get Gatorade (never been a big fan of drinking calories, but after Krisse’s post, I knew it had to help as I felt so dehydrated).  When he called, he was already on his way back from the store with 2 Gatorades.  I love my beau. I honestly wept when I hung up the phone. He even walked to meet me to get me my fuel.  Although I’m excited to run this race, I know that our training in our head has got to step it up if I want to continue running.  We have much to learn about fueling and becoming more in tune with our bodies to be the most effective when we are out on the pavement.
  • Spiritual–We began a new series at church this past week about relationships and what a beautiful mess they are.  Man, once again, it so hits home. The series is centered around what has long been one of my favorite verses: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and all your strength and love your neighbor as yourself.”  (Luke 10:27) It’s all about loving God so you can better love others.  We were able to get a first hand experience of this as the Beau and I headed to West Liberty, which was one of the communities severely hit by the tornadoes that came through a few weeks ago.  Talk about perspective.  It’s so sad to see the destruction that a storm of this caliber can create.  It’s also humbling to remember that something we cannot control can have such a huge affect on our lives.  It also ushered in a sense of trust in God’s goodness to us in the midst of difficulty.
  • Creative–Nothing too creative this week…probably going to be benched for a few weeks to be honest.
  • Home–Very thankful to get some spring cleaning done!  Yay! I purged my closet and dresser of unused/unwanted clothing, sorted my closet entirely by color (yes, I ROY G BIV’d it and I’m not ashamed), and am excited about working my wardrobe a bit more creatively.  I have a work conference coming up along with a few more down the pipe this year and I’d love to be able to utilize my wardrobe more effectively (and in everyday wear as well).
  • Personal–It’s been a very random week to say the least.  Students were gone on spring break, but we were in the office.  I had scheduled to be off a few days at the end of the week and then we did tornado relief, so I was only in the office two days.  Very unusual, but I’ll take it. I’ve been staying pretty on top of things with my Week at a Glance planner, even in the randomness of the week.  I was very fortunate to have some time have a girls day for myself on one of those days off-brunch with girlfriends, a gift certificate for a massage, a hair appointment.  It was lovely.  Thursday also started March Madness, so we’ve been watching lots of basketball around our house.  Loving that our Kentucky Wildcats are looking so good and there have been some really amazing Cinderella stories.

Mom Update: Still having quite a bit of back pain, but trying to stay positive!

Yummy Recipes! Such a crazy week, I made some staples of Sausage Balls and Brussel Sprouts, as well as yummy Sausage, cabbage and apples on St. Patty’s Day! Have a much better “normal” week and more yummy meals on tap!

Things I’m learning: My “theme” for the week on my weekly planner was “Calm.”  It’s funny how on spring break week when most folks week is not calm, and my week honesty was (on the surface) quite hectic, I had a sense of calm resonating from deep within that sustained me.  The other thing I’ve been learning–not so deep.  When you’re planning a 6am run with the beau, a) remember that the time change makes the sun rise later, b) make sure you both have your headlamps c) know your route.  Secondly, when  you forget all those things and have to run at noon with the sun blazing at 70 degrees on March 18th, don’t complain about your sunburn and increased number of freckles.

Interesting quote/Scripture:

My verse for the week–“For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.” 1 Corinthians 1:25  I sense God is stirring some things deep down within that seem very foolish to me.  I guess they’re right on point then.  Stay tuned…

Weekly Roundup-March 9, 2012

**Get ready folks! I’ve got bookooh’s of photos in this post. How in the world do you spell that word anyways…**

Goals:

  • Physical–Ran with Lex Ladies Run on Saturday and that was really great. It was really nice to run with people–even if I was much slower than most of them, just knowing they were out there and catching up with some of them at the end was really awesome. It was also really great to just be out there running part of the Run the Bluegrass Course! It’s absolutely beautiful! Now that the race is just 22 days away (ack!) I’m really getting excited, but also still very nervous. We are both getting back on the Paleo wagon after a few little slips here and there–it seriously makes us both feel so much better.
  • Spiritual–The Depth Group that I lead weekly with some college women has been studying Celebration of Discipline this year, which has always been one of my favorites. We had one of the best discussion of the year (in my opinion) on confession. It was really, really good. Sidenote–I’m always so challenged when talking with college students–being in the classroom for many of them who are studying theology or just in a required bible class gets them thinking in ways that I typically don’t. For instance, one student this week just casually said, “so Faith, what’s your view on predestination?” I had to honestly say, “well, I don’t really think about it that much, so let me think and then get back to you.” I’m the student in these situations. Okay–back to Depth group–really, really loved our discussion on confession. We talked about our salvation and how it is not necessarily an event, but an ongoing process and that we must constantly be in a state of seeking to be better, to grow, to change. We cannot do this on our own. We must constantly pursue Christ. It also brought me back to a quote I read in my devo time this week. From the book The Imitation of Christ, “Be not angry that you cannot make others as you wish them to be, since you cannot make yourself as you wish to be.” Ouch.
  • Creative–Definitely stepped this up but forgot to take photos! ACK! I will update, but I made the prayer sticks and the date night jar as well. Love them both! I’m looking forward to more things that I can do this Sabbath Sunday!
  • Home–Had a busy weekend, so we didn’t get much accomplished, but the week has been accomplished. It’s made us feel very busy–not sitting down for anything other than when we actually eat dinner, but good at the same time. We have been getting in our cleaning plan, which excites me as we are hosting our small group tonight and I don’t have to worry about our house being in disarray! Yay! Looking forward to a weekend of cleaning out and purging. We are such an over-stuffed society with stuff we just don’t need. We also finally got something put on the walls that had just been staring there since…Oh, January or so.

I made some delish stuffed peppers last night that I found from this new favorite food blog. I added some cauliflower rice and it made 6 very stuffed peppers! The best part-another crockpot meal to my lineup! SCORE!

And finally. Green Smoothies. Our new favorite (after we buckled down and scored a new blender). We’ve had one every day. Yum. And I PROMISE you cannot taste the spinach. One of those times I was kicking myself for NOT pinning something initially seen on pinterest.

Things I’m learning: So much. Where to begin really. Still processing Dark and Light. Rootedness. Slowing down. I think that’s the thing that has hit home the most this week. We had a 1/2 day staff conference at my work and our wellness coordinator was talking about Health Made Simple–3 Do’s and 4 Don’ts. The don’ts included not going through a drive through (uh-oh, Chick-fil-a), not using tobacco, and not drinking pop/soda and especially diet pop/soda. The fourth thing was not to do everything at one time. Our speaker was meaning all three of these things–don’t quit them all at once. But when I saw it on our handout, I immediately just though–don’t do everything in life all at once, Faith. I’m constantly wondering how people do it. Thinking about Brene Brown’s talk about how we are the most stressed, over medicated, overweight, over worked country and yet we just keep doing it. One day it’s going to catch up with us. I”m so ready to slow down a bit. Looking forward to a few days next week to do that.

Weekly Roundup-March 3, 2012

Goals:

  • Physical–Overall, I have felt so much better this week!  Physically, my runs have been more en pointe, I’ve had more motivation at work and felt really great.  So far this week I’ve ran 11 miles, pulling my first 7 miler before work yesterday.  I’m very thankful to have a flexible work environment that understands my training must be ramped up for the next month and I may be a little late 1-2 days a week.  I’m looking forward to my first run on Saturday with Lex Ladies Run.  I have been so encouraged this week by their online presence and encouragement.  Now that I’m in the homestretch of my training, I really need to pick up the pace and intensity and I’m certain that having a group of ladies to run with will do the trick.  There are several 3K’s and 5K’s they are participating in before our 1/2 Marathon, but even one run with them before the big day will be great!  I’m looking to clock 9 miles, my longest run ever!  Say a little prayer for me!  I’ve also been wanting to get back in the gym and throw some weights around.  Not only will it be great physical training and a way to get some stress relief, but most women I’ve seen who have dropped some serious pounds have spent their time in the gym at some point.  It will be much easier to run those 13 miles in 29 days if I can drop a few more pounds by then.  Now that I’m getting more comfortable with running longer distances during the week, I may pick back up my Cardio Sculpt class twice a week at work.
  • Spiritual–I’m still hearing a lot about the darkness and the light, but this week’s theme has been “Rooted.”  Now, if you know me at all, you know I love trees.  I love the imagery of trees and their deep rootedness, I got a tree pendant for Christmas and even have a Tree Pinterest board.  I love Ephesians 3:17 that says “I pray that love may be the ground into which you sink your roots and on which you have your foundation.”  That may be my favorite verse.  So anyway, along with the images of dark and light, I’ve been reminded of the importance of having a solid foundation and making your roots sink deep.  Roots were even mentioned in the church service we attended on Sunday when we took a day away to Cincinnati.  I’m also back to reading The Circle Maker and it’s been need to see a type of rootedness he describes when talking about “Hyperlinking” your prayers.  So need how God created us for connection and to have a solid foundation  and we have that ability if we look for it.
  • Creative–I  have several ideas and am making this my accountability statement that I will spend some time this Sunday during our Sabbath to put those ideas into action!
  • Home--Saturday was really productive at our house as we not have our Deep Freeze hooked up in our basement AND lights downstairs with a switch!  Before we just had clamp lamps and it made doing laundry a bit scary.  Laundry is much more enjoyable now!  As I mentioned earlier, we took off on a spur of the moment Cincinnati Trip for the day on Sunday as a bit of a get-a-way.  We enjoyed a service at Crossroads Cincinnati and burger madness at Arthurs,but we also wanted to run some errands at our favorite Cincy Stores, Trader Joes, The Container Store and Ikea.  The Container Store wasn’t open yet when we were on that side of town, but we had a very fruitful visit to TJ’s and Ikea.  We had a budget at Ikea and stayed within it (WOWZA!) even though there were a few extra things not on our list that ended up in our cart.  We have already “implemented” several of our purchases–paper towel holder and a bathroom towel holder, and have several others hoping to be utilized soon.  We scored some curtains for the living room and some really great fabric on sale that I’m going to make (with help of course) some curtains for the window in our stairwell.  At the time, we weren’t sure where they were going to go, but since having them home and doing some clean up and re-organizing furniture around the house, I think it’ll be the perfect fit for the stairwell.  And for $2.99 a yard, how could I pass this up?

  • Personal–Although Sunday was a busy day since we were out of town, it was a great weekend overall.  It’s always nice to take a step back from the norm and do something random and sporadic (and for all you folks who know the planner in me well, yes, I promise this is me still writing!).  I’m learning that sometimes, you just need to pack up and get out of dodge for a bit!  Again, this week overall has been really great–I’ve felt in the groove with my running, productivity at work and home, balanced with rest (we may or may not have been in bed at 8pm last night!)  Looking forward to another similar weekend of balanced productivity on our home and rest (and crafting!  I haven’t forgotten!)

Mom Update: Mom is doing well–she has an appointment with an orthopedic doctor today about a back brace.  She was fitted for one a few weeks ago and should receive it today.  They’ve said they are pretty uncomfortable in the beginning and I’m praying that she’ll be able to endure the pain as I think it will be a great support for her back.  She hasn’t felt the greatest this week between her arthritis flaring up and just feeling a little sick, so I’m hoping a day out with her sister and Mom and good news at the orthopedist will be a good ending to her week.

Yummy Recipes! I had a few new recipes on the docket and some old standby’s . We enjoyed (and still are!) some great Pulled Pork on Monday.  This is SUCH an easy recipe and if you are at home to turn the pork, I’m sure it’d be even better.  Ours turned out a little charred since I was at work, but that’s okay with pulled pork, right?  You want that charred taste.  We had some staples of Pumpkin Chili and Harvest Stew this week as well–I haven’t fixed the harvest stew in a while and while it’s a staple in the fall, we had some sweet potatoes and apples that needed to be used and stew meat was on sale so we were sold!

Prayer Sticks

Things I’m learning: Last week’s things I was learning: Margin.  Balance.  Rest.  This week has been the result of living into some of those things.  I still have to “knock it off” when I feel some perfectionism tendencies kicking in.  “Judge not least ye be judged” also applies to me.  If others I’m living life with–my spouse, friends and even co-workers (since I work at a faith based institution) are living into this scripture, hopefully they will be slow to judge when I integrate margin and balance into my life.   I also read this really great article sent to me from my friend Amanda about being positive towards our spouse, but I also think that can come into play with all relationships in life.  Thanks Amanda for sending that my way!

Weekly Roundup-February 24, 2012

Goals:

  • Physical–It’s been a good week.  This week’s running schedule was a little lighter as compared to last week’s 8 miler to cap the week.  Speaking of that 8 miler–I did finish it.  Man—what a feeling of accomplishment and exhaustion all wrapped up into one 1/2 hour of laying on the couch with my legs elevated after it was over.  I know that continuing to lose some pounds will help out with some of the pain I’ve been experiencing in my knees.  I’ve been a little more lax in my eating –still eating “Paleo”, but with more choice meals and items than I know is good for me.  That will definitely be reigned in as I’ve seen such a difference in my energy level, my weight and just overall temperament this week.
  • Spiritual–I’ve put The Circle Maker on a bit of a hold to read a book I ordered so that I could participate in an online book club over at The Clothes Make The Girl for The Gifts of Imperfection.  Man–it is similar to One Thousand Gifts, in that I want to make this a book I read multiple times a year.  The author, Brene Brown, is a researcher at the University of Houston, but there have been so many spiritual “a-ha” moments, its’ just crazy. One thing I think is so neat is just the way that God chooses to echo certain things over and over and over in your life.  Right now, it’s all about the darkness and the light. In the [somewhat] words of Kari Jobe, “I am the light of the world–I am a city on a hill…”  I wasn’t able to go to an Ash Wednesday service this week which made me very sad, but I had some great discussions with some students about it.  Being that I’m giving up one of my major vices, I’ve had to retrain the folks at the local establishments I visit that my ‘”regular” order will be sans my favorite beverage for a while. More on this to come…
  • Creative–Still at a standstill in this area.  But, I did read a great thought on creativity last night in The Gifts of Imperfection that really got me motivated. Brene says “If creativity is seen as a luxury or something we do when we have spare time, it will never be cultivated.”  (p.97). Talk about being convicted for “lack of time” for projects!  I must make this a priority to cultivate my giftedness–whether that is blogging, crafting or letter writing.
  • Home--Things just feel so much “homier”–it’s amazing what real furniture, lamps and some intentional home-care will do.  We still have some projects that need finishing, but I’m hopeful to have some updates on those soon.  And I was reminded that I really need to post some photo updates of our hose on the blog–I can’t believe that hasn’t happened yet!  Perhaps that will be a project I tackle in March–I only have a few days to finish my February project!  This week we began implementing our daily cleaning blitz and so far, I think it’s gonna be really great for us to make sure our home is clean on a consistent basis.  When you live in an older home you are renovating, in the beginning it just NEVER feels clean, but since it’s feeling more like home, it’s just become more obvious how dirty our old home can get. 🙂  We take 15, 20, 30 minutes (really just depends on if we have dinner in the oven and how long that will take) and tackle an area of our home.  We just do this three days a week, but I feel it’s going to make a huge impact.  One day is surfaces, the next day is floors and the last day is bathrooms and just general “picking up” prior to the weekend when we’re more likely to have folks over.
  • Personal–Been a bit of an “off” week for me–very pendulum swinging from super slow to oh-my-gosh-how-did-my-day-become-so-crazy-am-I-gonna-survive?  I’m looking forward to a nice Sabbath rest on Sunday. And some crafting.

Mom Update: Mom was moved to a different room this week and has a roommate now!  I think this will be really great for her–we all can get lonely from time to time and being in a situation like she is, I’m sure it’s only compounded.  There are always adjustments, but we’ll make it work.  If you’d like her new room number (for card sending purposes) let me know!

Yummy Recipes! Again, with the crazy week that was, I don’t even remember the recipes from this week other than they were some old standards.  However, I did make some super yummy Cabbage Soup that was just amazing (even though I used purple cabbage so my leftovers the next day were quite colorful) and the most amazing Banana Carrot muffins.  There was no added honey or maple syrup and these bad boys were delish!  I was very proud that we didn’t devour them by Tuesday!  They were that good.  I forgot to take photos of either (Photo Phail!) but I’m sure they’ll both grace the menu again soon!

Things I’m learning: Margin.  Balance.  Rest.  Themes I can’t seem to get away from. I question a lot that doesn’t show up on this blog and spent time in prayer and reflection wondering if my life is having the meaning it is intended to…(okay–so now it’s on the blog).  I want my life to mean something.  I want the business of my life to be for eternal and intentional gains; not personal ones for me or others.  Not quite sure what all this means, just a bit of what floats around in my head…

Weekly Roundup-February 17, 2012

Goals:

  • Physical–Got a little off schedule on our runs, but at the same time, I don’t want to get so consumed by running that I can’t still manage things in our life that are also important.  We were traveling,  plus I came down with a cold, so there were a few runs that didn’t happen, but I still got out there yesterday and ran 6 and will run 8 tomorrow.  My knees really bothered me after those 6 miles, but it was also raining, so I coated them with IcyHot last night and they feel a million times better today.  One SUPER exciting thing was our annual Health Risk Assessment at work this week.  I was a little nervous about going because it had been a while since I’d had these levels checked and although I KNOW that Paleo works for us and I’ve seen results in the way my clothes are fitting and on the scale, I was anxious to see if my numbers were going to say the same–boy did they ever!  I could not have been more pleased!

  • Spiritual–God has really been reminding me the importance of prayer and what a difference that makes in our lives.  From my prayer runs (which still seem all over the place) to getting a copy of The Circle Maker last week when it was on sale for Kindle, I’m very aware of my prayer life right now.
  • Creative–I haven’t done much crafting lately, but have a lot of things on tap that I want to do, thanks to Pinterest!  Perhaps I’ll carve some time out on Sunday Sabbath to do so!
  • Home--Definitely moving forward on a lot of projects!  We acquired some new furniture pieces while helping Mom clear out her apartment so our bedroom is much more bedroom functional with another dresser and actual bedside tables rather than the TV trays that had been flanking our bed for the past 2.5 years of our marriage.  🙂  We also have moved some pieces around downstairs and are liking how that’s all turning out.  My goal is still to have the Nook “finished” by the end of February.  We have a few things at Ikea and the Container store to pick up so those might not quite be in by then, but it WILL be done by then.
  • Personal–It’s really been a great week!  I entered a muffin contest yesterday and won with my Paleo Pumpkin Dark Chocolate muffins (blog post forthcoming soon!).  Work has been good, a little crazy, but good.  I’m so glad that I cleared my schedule to get some rest this week as I had a bit of a cold (more on this below).

Mom Update: Things are going well–I was able to conference call in to a care plan meeting with the folks there last week and I think we are well on our way to getting Mom better!  We had a really productive weekend there and she is well on the way to being out of her apartment by the end of the month.  She had some good time with her sister Donna on Valentine’s Day.

I have a TON of t-shirts that just need to go–they don’t fit right or I just don’t like the cut, but I really don’t want to really get rid of them–looking forward to a crafting day to try this!

We use coconut oil a lot to cook with and I’ve heard it has a ton of uses, but MY, oh MY!  Super excited to try many of these!

Although I took last week off to “recoup”, I’m hoping something like this will really keep me on track, blog-wise.  I’m probably just going to print out the pages and keep them in my Home Management notebook as to not have one more planner in my life.  🙂

Things I’m learning: Once again, rest is so important.  I said “no” to things that were just going to “clutter” my week, one thing being this blog.  As much as I love writing and the sense of creativity this little space allows me, I knew that I needed rest, especially after coming down with a cold.  Although the blog and other things I said no to are all great, sometimes we have to allow ourselves the freedom to just say no. 

Interesting quote/Scripture: “My Presence will go with you and I will give you rest” Exodus 33:14  This has been my “theme verse” for this week and it has been so nice to remember that God’s presence is with me and giving me rest.// “He renews my soul.” Psalm 23:3–not sure if I had heard that version (God’s word translation) of that specific verse–love the visual and feeling of my soul being renewed.

Weekly Roundup-February 3, 2012

Goals:

  • Physical–Our Whole30 finished this past week and the beau and I were both very pleased with the results!  We have definitely gone past the “let’s do this for 30 days to see how we feel” phase to more of a “I can’t imagine eating any other way.” Everyone has different views on “diets” and healthy eating and I’m not going to harp on what that means, but I’ve had a lot of folks inquire about Paleo, so I’ve compiled a little post of my own about what Paleo has meant to us.  Running is continuing to be great.  We had a slower week last week, and are building back up to a 7 miler tomorrow.  I’m adjusting to the blisters and got some recommendations for great socks that are supposed to help, so I hope to check those out soon.  They don’t hurt, so I’m thankful fro that.  Cardio Sculpt, a class offered through my work, started this week and I’m pumped to get a little more cardio and sculpting going on…and to hang out with work friends in a non-work environment.  Oh..and yoga begins next week.  My energy level is through the roof and I’m so thankful to have found a rhythm and routine that works for us.
  • Spiritual–Continuing to learn what it means to listen to God.  It’s not always easy, but always worth the time spent silencing your heart and mind and just being still.  So thankful my creator loves me and calls me his own.  Also praying about some new opportunities to serve and fulfill God’s calling on my life.  So thankful for little nudges of God’s love through things like this.  Also some great conversations and opportunities with students that are oh, so fulfilling!
  • Creative–Need to get to some crafting…haven’t gotten anything in that arena done yet.
  • Home--Saturday didn’t see as many things done in regards to the nook…or our trim, for that matter.  BUT, we have LIGHT at the bottom of our stairwell, some new electrical outlets and definite progress was made.  We hope to continue some of these during this coming weekend.  We also are on board with our own personal budgeting plan for 2012 (a little slow, I know) and reigning things in so we can finish house projects and do a few fun things throughout the year.
  • Personal–I have the most awesome husband.  I know many of you out there would say the same thing about yours, but I truly am blessed.  I got a new nickname this morning–Cherry Bomb…the beau said “‘Cause you have red hair and your the bomb.  It’s your biker nickname.”  I mean, how can you not smile at that. Seriously though, it’s been a busy week, but such a good week.  We are doing really well and I’m feeling very productive which always makes one feel great.

Mom Update: Mom is adjusting to the new facility after a rough first 24 hours.  She’s in therapy for her back pain daily and is thankful to have family close by to visit.  If you’d like to send her a card to cheer her up, post a comment with your email and I’ll send you her mailing address.

Yummy Recipes! [Photo phail again!  Agh!]  This week was once again a combo of old standards and new concoctions.  Shepherds Pie was on the table, although I didn’t have onion and for some reason thought the recipe included celery.  It wasn’t until after the celery was diced and sauteing that I realized the error of my ways.  It was still tasty though!   I made Pizza Soup in the crock-pot and that was yummy after getting home from cardio sculpt last night.  I will put less water and more meat and veg in next time though!  I’m excited about tonight’s meal–Meatza Pie and our appetizer feast for the Superbowl on Sunday!  Will definitely have to remember to take some pics to post!

Things I’m learning:  Rest is good.  God is good.  Sleep is good.  Working hard all week (even on Saturdays) makes Sunday Sabbath’s even more sacred and important.  And cleaning the house on Saturday night before Sabbath is even better so you aren’t distracted by mess and wanting to keep working.  That happened last week and I just took a nap.

Weekly Roundup-January 27

Goals:

  • Physical–Running has been good!  7 miles on Sunday was SOOOO empowering, but tiring.  :).  I’ve been dealing with some major blisters on my feet I’m adjusting to, but overall, it’s been a really good week.    Our Governor Declared March 31st the State’s Day of Running, so I challenge all you Kentuckians out there to RUN on that day! (Run the Bluegrass 1/2 Marathon and 5K Deadline next Deadline is Jan 31!) Food wise, we are still totally on board and loving our Paleo eating plan and are looking forward to a few new “treat” recipes we’ve found (on occasion) once our Whole 30 is over .
  • Spiritual–Trying to figure out a new “routine” for my quiet times in the morning now that running has to fit in there too.  I’m enjoying praying on my runs, but I can’t journal while moving! Absolutely love the Accountability as always–its is so good for my soul and so good to know someone is going to call you to the carpet on things you’ve committed to doing.
  • Creative–I’ve been blogging and hope to spend some time tomorrow working on the Nook.  Haven’t had much time to craft, but I have a few projects I’d like to finish on Sunday during our Sabbath time.
  • Home- So thankful that this past weekend we got 2 BIG projects completed that have been gnawing  at both of us for some time.  We completely cleaned out our panty–got rid of ALL non-paleo items (we had a few still lingering around), swept, reorganized and man, oh, man, it has made such a difference.  We also organized (most) of our DVD collection (it’s pretty extensive) into this DVD container.  We bought it months ago.  Can we say–procrastinate much?
  • Personal–Still baby-steps, but I’m working on drinking less coffee and more water, being disconnected in the evenings (still a struggle for me–MUST leave the phone by the door or upstairs), and working on accomplishing my three things.  One of mine this week was to come up with a cleaning plan/schedule.  I’ve seen several fun ones on Pinterest–anyone have their own recommendations to share?

Mom Update: Been a challenging week with a few set-backs, but we’re excited that she will be moving to the new facility in Virginia today.  Please continue to keep her in your prayers.  She’s battling some infection and other issues and we need the infection to go away before anything else can be done.

Yummy Recipes! [Photo Phail–I took pics, but forgot to upload!  I’ll do that soon, I promise!] Made some old standards, but started off the week with Paleo Fried Chicken and it was goooood!  My first attempt at fried chicken.  It made plenty, so Lewie was grateful to have some leftovers! I have a little grease burn, but it was worth it!

We finished the week with some old standards that are also super yummy!  Salmon Cakes, Cabbage Noodles with Sausage and Apples and tonight, Sweet Potato Hash!  YUM!

Things I’m learning:  I need my Sabbath time.  We worked really hard around the house on Saturday doing things that had been on our list for weeks and it feels so good to have them accomplished, but we didn’t allow time for our 7 mile run which meant it happened on Sunday.  The temperatures were much warmer then, so it wasn’t so bad, but that meant I had a completely packed day.  Just as I’m a cranky pants if I don’t get my quiet time, I’m cranky and just feel “off” all week with out that Sabbath time.  Definitely making that a priority this week!  I did have some encouragement to just have some Sabbath “moments” so I did that on Wednesday.

Weekly Roundup-January 20

Welcome to the new weekly roundup to be posted on Fridays.  Will give you a bit of a glimpse into what’s been going on this week in our life.  Enjoy!

Goals:

  • Physical– Things are going well in this arena.  I was really disappointed that I had some major plantar fasciitis earlier this week that knocked me on my tail for my 2 mi run.  I want to make sure I’m staying committed, so the thought of not running was discouraging (especially after just writing that post!), but I came back yesterday with a 5 miler!
  • Spiritual– Really loving a new accountability experience with a friend that has just really knocked things up a level for me.  It’s good (and bad) to know there’s someone out there who will call you out about things you’ve committed to do.  I’m also finding my longer runs as a great prayer time, which is an area that I’ve always wanted to grow.
  • Creative– This blog has been a creative outlet for me and also becoming more involved with our vocal team at church–I love the arts and it has always been the area for me that shines.  I’m looking forward to some crafting on Sunday—have a few projects that are half way done that I’d like to check off my list!
  • Home– Work day for the month planned for tomorrow.  I want to work on the trim some (we have a rule that until the downstairs trim is painted we won’t have any guests over.  We have our first friends scheduled in early February! eek!) I also want to get some things knocked out on my Nook!  I’m SOOO ready to have this area finished.
  • Personal-I have done well with “my 3 things” this week (more on this soon!) and just some of the overall goals of moderation that I wanted to see in my life.  There are lots of things in life that we can become “enslaved” to.  For me, that comes out in how many cups of coffee I drink every day, how connected I am to my phone, being connected to friends via texts and emails and never hearing their voice on the phone or carving out time to see them.  I’m baby-stepping this area, but so far, so good!

Mom Update:  Things are definitely moving forward!  We came up with a list this weekend of where she wants all her furniture to go and it looks like she’ll be moving to a long-term care facility in Virginia in the next week!  God is GOOD!

Yummy Recipes! I was adventurous last week and made a butternut squash sweet potato soup.  It was SOOO good!  I’m going to try it again tomorrow in the crockpot and make it a little thicker.  You can’t go wrong with anything that calls for bacon crumbled on top!   I had two recipes on dock this week from Paleo Comfort Foods, both with a little variation.  We made their Farmer’s Pie in new fun dishware that was a surprise Christmas gift when we visited mom as well as their Dirty Rice….both, oh so good!

Things I’m learning:  2 things this week that occurred to me both while running yesterday..  1)Persistence:. In my run, I thought a lot about how frustrated I was that I had missed the 2 miler earlier in the week, but yet, I was not out of the game altogether.  I still did a 5 mile run in my same time as I’ve done the last 3. Yes, persistence is important, but so is taking care of yourself.  Sometimes we self-sabotage ourselves to get “the list” completed when in all actuality, sometimes we just need to slow down and rest. 2) the familiar.  I can run all day, but nothing is better than getting to that one certain street that the Beau and I did most of our training for our 5K’s on.  We know the road, traffic patterns, and how fast (most) folks drive.  We know that if we run in the mornings, we can pretty much run on the street, but in the evenings, we must be on the sidewalk. I have to remember how important and safe the familiar feels.  My mom is getting ready to leave her familiar, so I must be prepared for helping her in that transition.
